North Sydney Bus Stop

Brief

To create an iconic bus shelter and canopy entrance in the heart of North Sydney which encompasses both the heritage character of the area and progressive and sustainable contemporary design.

Solution

the heritage bus shelter is the reference point for the design, unfolding the hipped roof to investigate the inherent raw geometry of the traditional roof. this unfolding reveals a 'net' structure, creating the opportunity to form a unique and relevant language for the new bus shelter form. this geometry also draws on the inherent qualities of a tree canopy and its structure. beyond the bus shelter itself, the design philosophy focuses on the creation of a real visual and physical permeability of the entire site. by separating, augmenting or consolidating different pathways, the shelter/kiosks become inherently linked and this is extended to the aesthetic in the canopy over the Greenwood Plaza / North Sydney Station underpass entrance.
